Last month Scottish Development International, Scottish Enterprise and Textiles Scotland, along with Traditional Home, invited a few US designers to Scotland. The goal of the trip was to increase awareness of Scottish textiles for interiors use. The fashion industry knows well the exceptional quality of Harris Tweeds, Scottish cashmere, wool, lace, and tartans fabrics. In fact, some of the best fashion houses in the world work with Scottish mills (The Hermès Group, Burberry, Louis Vuitton, Ralph Lauren). Now, Textiles Scotland, and its various umbrella organizations, want to encourage interior designers to utilize the country’s finest textiles.

Stewart Roxburgh and Jennifer Williamson, our fantastic hosts, arranged an incredible itinerary that took our group from Glasgow to Elgin to Edinburgh to Perth and back again to Glasgow (all in a four day period).  A few highlights along the way were: Morton Young and Borland, Begg Scotland, Macnaughtons, Johnstons of Elgin, Benromach Whisky tour,  lunch at 21212,  Dovecot Studios, Champagne at Hamilton and Inches, meeting with Malcolm Campbell of Harris Tweed Textiles, Holland & Sherry, and Timorous Beasties. Our day trips were rivaled only  by overnight stays at Cameron House (Loch Lomond), The Boath House (Nairn), Prestonfield Hotel (Edinburgh) and Blythswood Hotel (Glasgow). The Boath House, set on 20 acres, was particularly fun; the hosts provide guests with wellies, hats and walking sticks (all needed in this weather). It was like dress up for adults, as evidenced in the photos below.

The designers on the whirlwind trip included Philip Gorrivan, Tobi Fairley, Patrik Lonn, Gideon Mendelson, and Anne Maxwell Foster of Tilton Fenwick, who were joined by Jill Esterman and Beth Brenner from Traditional Home. The designers’ impressions from the trip will be capsulized in a special section in the October issue of Traditional Home. I can’t wait to see the results, and hope this is the first of many such visits.

I’m in love with the textiles and Scotland. The colors of the cashmeres and textures makes me want to reach out and touch them. It looks like you guys had a great time. Thanks for sharing. Mary
