Making Progress

Our hallway is coming along, slowly but surely. It took the whole week to tape off and paint. I underestimated the time and labor involved in this project, but it was well worth it! It really looks great and the color is just what I hoped it would be—subtle, yet rich in depth.
In the end I tested 9 paint samples and I am so glad that I did…I love the end result!
The winner of the paint sample competition went to Farrow & Ball’s Shaded White. Despite the name it’s not white at all!
Today the electrician is coming to put in small recessed downlights. Yes, I am still keeping the chandelier! It’s great for ambiance and was a birthday gift from my husband. It’s still one of my most prized possessions, however, it does not give off great light in a large hallway, especially if displaying art. We have acquired two more pieces to add to our collection. It is going to take a lot of time and money to fill this hallway, and unfortunately it seems that right now I have more time! Now I just need to start shopping for new carpet…

BtC – I tried F & B french gray (see top row, middle color) but it was too dark for the hallway–it gets little natural light.

Doesn’t a fresh coat of paint make a huge difference? So many designers say it is the most important element in changing the feel of a room.
Your gallery post has inspired me to get on with my plan to have a gallery of sketches and small oil paintings for my stairwell. I have long admired the look, and have done posts on designers takes on the gallery wall, but have focused on other things. Yesterday I made my first purchase towards making my gallery wall happen!
P.S. – Would love to know where you stayed in Paris, as I am planning a trip there. I am going back to read the post where your readers left suggestions for hotels.

Ronda, That color is so great. I have a very similar color in my master bath, now going on 5 years and I’ve never tired of it. Can’t wait to see all the art hung. LOVE that color!

Ronda – Oh, how I love to paint a room. All the swatches and the watching the light change. Then the dramatic before and after. It’s beautiful. And the chandelier too – wonderful.

Nice hall, but those doors are too boringly white and glossy.
Why not take the John Fowler approach and paint them in 3 closely toned shades of white?
The formula is: Sunk panels, as the wall colour.
Stiles and Rails, a slightly deeper white.
Mouldings: Palest white~in your case the white of
the door surround and the rest of the woodwork.
Not the least bit difficult as a rule!

Good suggestion…if we owned the flat I would opt for the formula. We sold our house in the US and are temporarily letting in the UK until we decide the duration of our stay. I think the owner is happy to let me paint the walls, but woodwork might be another story.
